Now that the new year is here, make some resolutions to help keep your pet healthy and happy this year. There are many ways your pet can have a healthy year:

- Even though our weather can be snowy and cold, walk your dog each day.Take a stroll and enjoy some quality time with your furry friend.  Make sure your dog is bundled if it is a small breed dog. There are so many colors and styles of sweaters and coats available. Boots are also great to protect their feet from salt and ice. Lets face it , a walk is good exercise for you and your pet.

- If you haven't had your pet in for a physical, now's the time. All pets need an annual examination from their veterinarian once a year. Even if vaccines aren't due, or your pet was in for another reason this year, annual exams are important. Dogs & cats, birds, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, and exotics need to be checked yearly.

- To help our pets live a long and healthy life, annual profiles should be done. Just as we would have bloodwork performed, pets need annual blood profiles done. It is important to check the organs to make sure they are functioning  properly. Each of our hospitals offer a variety of age appropriate profiles. Early detection enables our veterinarians to diagnose potential diseases before they become a serious issue. Our veterinarians can help decide which profile is best for your pet.

- Brush! Brush! Brush! Our pets need to have their teeth brushed 2-3 times weekly on average.Plaque and tarter build up can cause many serious health problems. The best time to get your pet into the habit of teeth brushing is when they are puppies & kittens. However, it's never too late to start. Each of our hospitals have feline and canine toothbrushes available. Also, remember that the month of February is dental month. Each of our hospitals will be offering  a 20% discount on professional dental services. Call for information on dental estimates.

- Things Happen!  If you have been putting off looking into pet insurance, now's the time. Unforeseen situations may arise, so be prepared. There are many different plans available. So do your homework, read the fine print and don't delay being financially protected. Pet insurance helps cover the cost of treatment for unexpected illnesses, accidents, and injuries. Our hospitals recommend Pets Best Insurance.  You can visit their website on our menu.
